PATRICK Lui graduated from Diocesan Boys' School and the Hong Kong Baptist University, receiving a BA (Hons) in Music, and is currently studying jazz performance and composition at Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA), a leading music college which has also schooled such accomplished local musicians as: Ted Lo, Joseph Koo SBS ( 顧嘉煇 ), Chan Fai Young ( 陳輝陽 ) and Ronald Ng ( 伍樂城 ).

During his university years, besides being trained primarily as a composer, Patrick also pursued performance skills as a pianist; he obtained his DipABRSM (Performance), and not limiting himself to classical music, Patrick had also taken a deep interest in jazz. He took lessons with celebrated jazz musicians Tony Carpio and Ted Lo, the latter also highly acclaimed as a pop music producer/arranger. Patrick soon became the pianist for the HKBU Jazz Ensemble, led by renowned flautist and former Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra flautist Tim Wilson, and upon graduating in 2005 Patrick was immediately hired to become coach. Under his tutorage, the band soon recorded its debut CD “Our Set of Standards” by the end of the year. Patrick eventually left for USA to continue his music studies in early 2006, and the band has since then been coached by Ted Lo until present.

Patrick travels back to Hong Kong regularly and remains active on the local jazz scene. Performing mainly with his local jazz band Renfrew Group which he serves as music director and pianist, the group has landed on quite a few significant gigs and made their mark in the past two years. The group gave its debut performance when it was invited to perform as the opening act in the 1st Hong Kong Jazz Festival at the Fringe Club. Patrick and his group continued to perform actively, and by 2007 the group and its members has already played for audiences at major jazz clubs such as Blue Door, the Fringe Club, the Foreign Correspondents' Club, the newly emerged and widely popular live music host Backstage restaurant, to name but a few. They recently gave a featured full length recital in August 2007 titled “Bilinguals” in which the group showcases its members' skills in both classical and jazz styles. At the concert the group also released their critically acclaimed first album “24/7” featuring jazz standards, and also an original song Patrick has written for the group to participate in the Soundbase ( 原音 ) music competition organized by Tom Lee Music Ltd., in which Patrick and his band took home the bronze prize. In January 2008 the group was invited by RTHK Radio 4 to do an interview and demonstration on the music, on the program “Belle Nuit” hosted by renowned pianist Nancy Loo ( 羅乃新 ), which was very well-received.

Alongside his jazz endeavors Patrick has also ventured into the field of pop music as well as. In 2004 while still in school his jazz influenced tune 我不可愛 won “The Most Creative Song” award in a song writing competition held by the acclaimed local musicians' support group Green Coffee. The finals took place in Harbour City and Patrick's tune received its performance by Pong Nan ( 藍奕邦 ), accompanied by Patrick himself on piano. Patrick also headed local pop group MAZ which also took part in the Soundbase competition in 2005 and won the silver prize.

Setting his goal to be an all-rounded musician, Patrick did not limit himself to jazz music or to be just a piano player; he is also an accomplished composer/arranger. During his years in HKBU he was frequently invited to do film scores for independent films for students from the acclaimed Cinema/Television department, and was eventually invited to score for the RTHK TV program 十九歲的甜不辣 which aired on ATV in September 2006. He has also written three musicals: “Butterfly's Nocturne” for his alma mater Diocesan Boys' School; “Tears Of the Hedgehog” for HKBU(both musicals have soundtracks released); and “ 男童聲.難同聲 ” for the Hong Kong Children's Choir which he began singing with at the age of 7. He has since toured with the choir to Canada , Japan and Guanzhou as choir leader, and again immediately invited back to be a piano accompanist after leaving as a chorister. By putting his training into good use, he co-founded Hong Kong vocal ensemble “Viva! Voce” in 2005 and captured the championship of the 1 st Hong Kong Youth Singing Festival merely weeks after, taking home the Dr. Yip Wai-hong MH trophy, just a few months before leaving for the USA.

Patrick now has his own jazz group in Boston and has been frequently hired for regular and one-time engagements such as performances at Foxwoods Resort Casino (Connecticut), Jin Restaurant (Saugus), China Pearl (Boston), and also backed several celebrated Hong Kong and Taiwan pop singers as a guest band member when they toured the USA, including Johnny Yip ( 葉振棠 ) and Yu Ya ( 尤雅 ). He has also performed numerous public recitals and concerts, both as leader and sideman, sharing stages with musicians from all over the world including Greece , Italy , Japan , Korea , Taiwan , USA etc.
